Chlamydia and blindness

Chlamydia and blindness

Postby nikita » Tue Jun 16, 2009 2:56 pm

Is it true that if a woman contracted chlamydia during her pregnancy, this could result to a blind baby? How does that work exactly? Is there a way to prevent the baby from becoming blind?

Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in the United States. It often has no symptoms and people may not be aware that they have it. Women are usually tested for Chlamydia when they become pregnant; however, if it is contracted during the pregnancy it can be harmful to a newborn baby causing pneumonia and eye infections that could lead to blindness. It can be transferred from the mother to the baby during the birthing process.

Hi suzi,

How do they usually treat pregnant women with chlamydia to prevent affecting the baby at birth?
